Truck Was Struck

Houston-based Annie Lin is a 5'4 guitar-toting pixie who plays quirky, acoustic pop. Often compared to such artists as Aimee Mann and Mary Lou Lord, she brings off-kilter charm and rock n' roll ferocity to the rarefied genre of folk. Annie has been touring for three years as a regular on the national club and coffeehouse circuit, selling out venues like the legendary Bitter End in New York City and Club Passim in Boston. She has shared stages at clubs and festivals with artists like Trish Murphy, Sarah Harmer, The Reputation (Elizabeth Elmore/ex-Sarge), Emm Gryner, Eliza Gilkyson, Edie Carey, Kevin So, and Terri Hendrix & Lloyd Maines. Influenced by obscure indie and lo-fi folk artists like IDA, Jen Wood, and Bonfire Madigan, as well as Lilith Fair alums like Juliana Hatfield and Liz Phair, Annie writes songs that might be classified as both FM-friendly and acoustic.

Once a full-time student at Rice University, she spent her undergraduate days playing nearly a hundred shows each year and building up a mailing list of more than 700 active fans. She first picked up a guitar in college after a boyfriend refused to teach her guitar and told her she couldn't join his band because girls can't play in a metal band. Annie promptly broke up with him, taught herself guitar, and started her own band. Since then, she's been logging many miles on the road and making name for herself in the singer-songwriter community and garnering attention from artists like Lisa Loeb and praise from critics at The Houston Chronicle, Houston Press, Orange County Register, Village Voice, and Boston Phoenix. Annie recently returned from a winter East Coast tour with the Asian-American Songwriter Showcase and is slated to release her recently completed record, Truck Was Struck on April 16, 2004.

In Truck Was Struck, Annie deconstructs a car accident and puts it back together from the perspective of the people involved. The record is Annie's reaction to the cases she read in torts as a University of Houston law school student and to the roadside emergencies she both experienced and observed while touring extensively. The album begins post-collision in a hospital with In the Waiting Room, a song about the surreal aftermath of a disaster. But the story of the accident itself unfolds in the record's title track, where a passenger tells a version of what really happened, separating the things that you did from the the things that were done to you and yet conceding that there are two kinds of lies. Other songs on the record present different stories of what happened before, after and during the crash.

The album was recorded with Eric Faucette of Johnny Killed Rock n' Roll Productions (Jana Hunter, The Groceries, Chasmatic) in Houston. The album features Chris Ryan on drums (Friendship, Menace of a Heartless Monster), Ryan Hull on bass (The Groceries), Nava on vocals (The Last Place You Look, Sixwest), and Gregory Kramer on cello. The album was mastered by Greg Teltschik and Mastered by Eugene Song (www.eugenesong.com), with photography by Celina Fang. Truck Was Struck is due for release on April 16, 2004, with a full band Houston CD release party slated for April 16 at Fitzgerald's.
