Heaven's Island/isla De Cielo

Heaven's Island is composed in a way to create a melodic illusion. The first song Heaven's Island takes you to the ocean in a Carribean ship sailing towards heaven, while the last song Merry-go-round is composed of a beat that sounds like horses hoofs and a brass section with a merengue riff to create an illusion of carousel music. The combination of my own fantasy and God's truth makes Heaven's Island a musical experience! The hispanic influences in my music comes from the love I have for the Spanish speaking people in my church. I also enjoy African music and have been inspired by The Soweto Gospel group from Africa to experiment with drum beats. The lyrics in these songs came at times of joy in my life and during down times. Merry-go-round was especially written for a friend of mine who was suffering from manic depression and it eludes to the symptoms of extreme highs and extreme lows of this disorder. Also when composing this album I had a desire to reach my two young sons. I knew I couldn't reach them with their kind of music so I chose this style because it had a festive and fun feel to it. I have spent twenty years praising God with the choirs of the United Pentecostal Churches and have been inspired by some of the world's best musicians there. I am a music minister in The United Pentecostal Church of Chapel Hill, N.C. and sing in the choir at the Durham church also. Our Durham choir ministered for the east coast conference of UPC Churches and accompanied Timothy Spell just recently in November. We have done Easter and Christmas musicals for crowds of 1500 to 2000 people however, I enjoy it just as much being a solo vocalist at the small church in Chapel Hill, N.C.
