Bolen's voice has a sweetness to it that lures me right in to these aggressive, bluntly honest, sometimes frighteningly graphic songs. I like the often-used contrast of her mournfully crooning voice over raging, highly-caffeinated guitar strumming. - Jennifer Layton, Indie-Music.com

LNC is the sophomore album of Sarah Bolen, the up-and-coming indie folk-rocker from Chapel Hill, NC. Bolen is known along the East Coast for her ruthless guitar-playing and simple yet addictive choruses. Buy either of her albums and you'll likely be singing them in the shower sometime soon. Bolen also stands out for the variety of styles her music encompasses. She plays mostly acoustic guitars, but occasionally will throw in an electric (Tarot Cards sounds more like the Dire Straits than any folk artist you're likely to hear) or high-string guitar to intensify her music. She's written blues songs, love songs, hate songs, political songs, funny songs, and the oh-so-popular sex song Ride, a creative response to Melissa Ferrick's Drive.

Similar to the music itself, the themes of LATE NIGHT CONFESSIONS display Bolen's growth. Cocaine addiction, narcissism, anorexia, homophobia and rape are all topics addressed by the album. But this is not to say that the album is all politics. Bolen coaxes you into the album with Retrospect, a witty anti-love song that is summed up in its chorus, I can't believe I loved you. This might seem reassuring to those who empathize with Tarot Cards, a song about cheating, and Vertigo, a ballad that attempts the arduous and thankless task of loving someone who refuses to love themselves. If you are looking for an album that is as consistent in subject matter as it is in sound, this is not the album for you. LATE NIGHT CONFESSIONS is a mosaic of anger, angst, sorrow, humor and sensuality. It is the emotional spectrum of one woman, which is probably why so many fans of the women's indie folk-rock scene have fallen in love with it.
