August

Mat Jones is hard to nail down. His music has been described as Alt-country, insurgent country, Texas Grunge, roots rock, punktry, etc. The labels don't really work. He plays an angry, sobering combination of booze, truth, love, lies, blood, guts, frustration and alienation. Mat Jones drags out songs perfectly suited for being pissed off at the one you love.

Born and raised in Texas, his early childhood was characterized by a steady diet of country music, Elvis Presley and a “typically catholic fear of God.” Jones brought his first guitar from a pawn shop at the age of twelve, “a $100 Les Paul knock off that fed back like hell.” It was the focus of a pretty standard rebellion, devoted to the early punk, metal, and grunge records he grew into.

Jones' seemingly disparate influences evolved into something that has been described as “the sound of Johnny Cash and Kurt Cobain in a drunken bar fight. In 2005, Jones released his debut album August, a collection of tunes capturing the sound he's become known for. August marks a departure from the conventional alt-country sound. It is, at once, a heartfelt and heavy, distinctively southern Rock n Roll album.

Drummer/Producer Brian Irwin and Bassist Tom Connolly comprise Jones' rhythm section, known as the Black Lung Insurgents. Together they pound out a backbeat with the energy of a runaway freight train, blasting out of a sawed-off double barrel shotgun, aimed straight at your chest.

Mat Jones and the Black Lung Insurgents hit the ground running around Southern California and surrounding areas year round. For more information on booking or show dates email: Jonestown@matjones.com.
